The Rolex Sea-Dweller, introduced in 1967, was developed in collaboration with professional divers to withstand the extreme conditions of deep-sea exploration. Its standout feature is the helium escape valve, a critical innovation that allows trapped helium gas to escape during decompression, preventing the crystal from popping off. The original model, the Sea-Dweller 1665, boasted an impressive water resistance of up to 610 meters (2,000 feet).
In 1988, Rolex introduced the Sea-Dweller 16600, enhancing its depth rating to 1,220 meters (4,000 feet) and featuring the reliable Caliber 3135 movement. This model remained in production until 2008, solidifying its status among dive professionals and enthusiasts.
Subsequent iterations, including the Deepsea models, have pushed the boundaries further, with water resistance up to 3,900 meters (12,800 feet). The Sea-Dweller continues to embody Rolex’s commitment to precision, durability, and innovation, making it a cornerstone of their professional watch collection.
