This flagship collection heralded the beginning of the “Art of Fusion” movement that has seen Hublot grow from strength to strength. Ideal for collectors of all ages and tastes, whichever model you choose, you are guaranteed to find a timepiece that offers unbeatable performance and eye-catching aesthetics.
The History of Hublot Big Bang Watches
Much like the name implies, the Hublot Big Bang made a huge impact when it was launched in 2005. The timepiece is almost single-handedly responsible for turning the brand’s fortunes around, going from a plateau in public interest to one of the most sought-after manufacturers in the world.
It all began when Jean-Claude Biver, who was barely a year into his tenure with the company, took the main features of the very first Hublot timepiece and created something that was the perfect fusion between the brand’s iconic design touches and modern tastes. A talented marketer, Biver was already a renowned name in the watchmaking world, after relaunching Blancpain and making it profitable again, and bolstering sales of Omega watches with clever product placement. He arrived at Hublot tasked with modernising the brand with a new flagship collection.
Upon release, the Big Bang immediately caught the attention of the watchmaking world. It won the title of Best Design at the Grand Prix d’Horologie de Geneve and soon helped increase Hublot’s revenue eightfold in the space of just four years. The watch was grounded in a new concept, the fusion of unusual materials — something that it still continues to this very day.
The timepiece could not have arrived at a better time either. In 2005, oversized and extravagant timepieces were incredibly popular and the watch industry itself was booming. Every detail of the Big Bang was created to appeal to the masses and serve the brand new concept of fusing materials.
A year later, in 2006, the Hublot Big Bang surfaced again with a new All Black design, ushering in what would be a longstanding trend in watch design. Then, in 2008, the brand extended its reach by debuting the first timepiece of the collection that was dedicated towards women. It was not just design that the manufacturer excelled in either, as 2013 saw the creation of the UNICO chronograph movement.
The collection would prove to go from strength to strength, with Hublot celebrating the collection’s tenth anniversary in spectacular fashion. Its sporty design was lent to the brand’s very first skeleton tourbillon that had a five-day power reserve indicator. A further ten High Jewellery versions were released, each paved with diamonds and selling for a million dollars each. The anniversary also showcased a Big Bang in Magic Gold, an alloy that was developed in 2011.
Thanks to multiple collaborations, Hublot Big Bang watches have continued to push the boundaries of design. It remains a tour de force for the brand that has brought unrivalled success.
