The real jewel in Rolex’s crown, Rolex Pearlmaster watches effortlessly blend opulence and quality. Made from the finest materials, the timepieces boast an elegant design and are backed by ingenious engineering. A real crowd pleaser, these watches are the perfect choice for people who want nothing but the best.
The History of Rolex Pearlmaster Watches
Rolex Pearlmaster watches are among the latest editions to the Swiss watchmaker’s illustrious catalogue. Released in 1992, the same year that also saw the launch of the original Yacht-Master, the Pearlmaster is essentially the more regal version of one of Rolex’s most revered and longest-running creations – the DateJust. The Pearlmaster is Rolex at its most creatively flamboyant and holds the honour of being among the brand’s most expensive creations.
The first of the Rolex Pearlmaster watches arrived in two sizes, 29mm and the larger 34mm model. Drawing plaudits for their eye-catching and opulent designs, the timepiece was an overdue addition to the manufacturer’s range of watches that were directly targeted at a female audience. The original pieces were powered by the in-house calibre 2135 and featured yellow and white gold cases, with dials available in a variety of colours.
At the end of the 90s, Rolex upgraded its movement and at the same time decided to make the Pearlmaster collection even more lavish. The company’s master gemologists were given free rein to create highly extravagant examples, such as the Reference 80359 and Reference 80339. Then, in 2005, the brand also introduced its proprietary Everose alloy to the range.
In keeping with Rolex’s tradition of releasing increased size options, further iterations of the Pearlmaster were released in 2015. Joining the existing lineup came a trio of 39mm timepieces, featuring either red grape, olive green or cognac sunburst dials. The bezels were set with a ring of sapphires that graduated through a range of colours to match the watch’s face. They also debuted a brand new movement, the calibre 3235
The following year, the crowning glory of the Pearlmaster collection arrived – the remarkable Reference 86409RBR. This sumptuous model featured so many diamonds that barely any of the white gold bracelet or case was visible. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it is one of the most expensive Rolex watches money can buy. At the same time, the 29mm version was quietly retired, leaving just the larger models in production.
Making the Pearlmaster
Creating Rolex Pearlmaster watches is not only a work of art in itself, but also a demonstration of the watchmaker’s manufacturing prowess. Very few companies besides Rolex have the knowhow and capabilities to master every single aspect of dial creation in-house, for example. Each dial boasts a truly unique character, thanks to the use of fine materials such as meteorite, diamonds, gold and mother-of-pearl.
When it comes to the choice of gems that adorn Rolex Pearlmaster watches, each one is selected according to rigorous criteria and then set using methods in keeping with the finest traditions. The watchmaker even has its own gemmology laboratory, where experienced professionals use state-of-the-art technology to check the quality of precious stones. After all, only the best will do for this exquisite collection. Once hand-picked, the gems are handed to the in-house master gem setters to carry out the fitting.
The Pearlmaster bracelet contributes greatly to the watch’s distinctive character, while also offering the wearer maximum comfort. With rounded solid 18 karat gold links, the bracelets are fitted with a concealed crown clasp that is functional yet elegant. Echoing the dial and bezel, the gem setting on the Pearlmaster’s bracelet provides the finishing touches to this watchmaking masterpiece.
Luxury and Innovation Personified
Rolex Pearlmaster watches are perhaps the most striking example of beauty and style. By combining technical mastery with the art of elaborate jewellery, the Swiss watchmaker created a collection that was propelled into the forefront of the horology world. The design has become a classic among contemporary watches, with many people regarding the Pearlmaster as a feminine interpretation of the Rolex DateJust.
Like many of their contemporaries, Rolex Pearlmaster watches are COSC certified chronometers, fitted with a self-winding mechanical movement that is tested thoroughly to ensure they work as efficiently as possible. This makes the timepieces both an impressive wristwatch that runs on precise Rolex time, while also acting as an exquisite and dazzling accessory for your wrist.
