The brand’s rich heritage is built on pushing boundaries and breaking rules, effortlessly incorporating the power of avant-garde technology. Heavily intertwined with sports, most notably racing, Tag Heuer watches have a lasting impact on their time and their era.
The History of Tag Heuer Watches
Although the brand name Tag Heuer was only coined in 1985, the company’s history dates back long before then. Named simply ‘Heuer’, it was named after its founder, 20-year-old Edouard Heuer in 1860. In just a few short years, Heuer filed an impressive number of patents, including one of the first keyless crown-winding mechanisms for pocket watches in 1869, and the oscillating pinion for mechanical chronographs in 1887. The latter is still used in the mechanical chronographs of the major Swiss watch brands.
In 1895, the company filed yet another patent for its first water resistant case, followed by their first dashboard chronograph in 1911. Named Time of Trip, this patent was especially significant as it sparked the longstanding relationship between the company and the automobile and airline industries. Heuer’s growth over this period allowed it to carry out increased research and development, which ultimately led to its next big breakthrough, the Micrograph. Released in 1916, this was the most accurate stopwatch at the time.
For the next few decades, Heuer continued to focus on its relationship with the airline and automobile sectors. The 1930s saw the company produce chronographs specially designed for pilots, before the brand introduced another dashboard instrument for aeroplanes and cars, the Autavia. This clock featured a timer function and was able to run for eight days without being wound.
The 1940s saw the brand make chronographs for the German Air Force, and start to develop their own wristwatches. The year 1948 saw the launch of the Auto-Graph, which featured a chronograph function with a tachometer scale and manual reference hand. A year later, the company debuted the Solunar, the first watch that had a tide indicator. This focus on wristwatches continued into the 1950s, with the release of the first Seafarer, which was the world’s first chronograph with a tide level and dial for regattas. In 1955, Heuer introduced the Twin-Time, a self-winding wristwatch that was equipped with a second time zone indicator. The 1950s also marked the beginning of the brand’s partnership with Abercrombie & Fitch, with Heuer producing exclusive versions of the Seafarer and Auto-Graph for the fashion brand.
In 1962, Heuer earned the honour of becoming the first Swiss watchmaker to enter outer space, when astronaut John Glenn made the first American space flight with a Heuer stopwatch on his wrist. A year later, the brand launched one of its now-iconic models, the Carrera chronograph. Then, in 1969, the company unveiled one of its most groundbreaking advancements, the world’s first self-winding chronograph movement. Codenamed Project 99, the Chronomatic as it became known was developed in conjunction with Breitling, Buren and Dubois-Depraz. Heuer went on to use it in three wrist chronograph models: the Carrera, the Autavia, and the brand new Monaco. The Monaco became extremely popular thanks to the prominent actor and racing legend Steve McQueen, who wore it while making the film Le Mans in 1970.
Fast forward to 1985, and a company called Techniques d’Avant Garde (TAG) acquired Heuer, giving it the name we know today. In 1992, Tag Heuer became the official timekeeper of Formula 1, a partnership which ultimately led to the creation of its Formula 1 collection of wristwatches. Shortly after, they launched the Link and Aquaracer collections under the new name. In 2015, Tag Heuer introduced its first smartwatch, the Tag Heuer Connected, and added a second model two years later.
