The History of Panerai Radiomir Watches
The story of Panerai Radiomir watches begins when the company switched its attention to the production of precision instruments, such as compasses and depth compasses. With war on the horizon, the brand manufactured these items for the Italian Navy. Recognising Panerai’s technological prowess, the Navy asked the company to devise a way to help their personnel see these complex instruments underwater. Panerai’s response was to patent a compound called Radiomir, named after the radium-based powder that afforded it luminous properties.
Following this, the Navy asked Panerai to turn this into a wristwatch that was designed for underwater use. Because Panerai was not capable of doing this at the time, it turned to watchmaking giant Rolex for assistance. Rolex provided the movements and helped with the manufacturing, with Panerai responsible for the design and the all-important Radiomir compound.
Starting in 1940, Panerai Radiomir watches were manufactured out of a single block of steel, with the timepieces later being upsized to an astonishing 60mm for the Egyptian Navy. As the years progressed, so did the Radiomir – with them gradually becoming even more legible and luminous. The casing was even completely redesigned at the behest of the Italian Navy.
Things really improved for the brand in 1993 when Panerai watches became available to the public, after decades of top secret classification. The very first of these Radiomir timepieces were limited to just 60 pieces in platinum and were fitted with a case that measured over 47mm in diameter. Over the years, many different Radiomir variations were released, including some with smaller cases. Popular models from the collection include the Radiomir PAM 210 and Radiomir 8 Days PAM 346.
Another popular selection of Panerai Radiomir watches is the Black Seal line, which holds a special place in the hearts of the Paneristi since it celebrates the original 1930s model. The names of these wristwatches hark back to the manned torpedoes that were used by the Italian Navy. The first model in this series, the PAM 183, was released in 2004 – with other popular iterations including the PAM 388, the PAM 287, and the PAM 292.
In 2012, Panerai introduced the new Radiomir 1940, which paid homage to the large 47mm diving watches from the 1940s. This timepiece quickly rose to the ranks of a modern classic, with the brand continuously releasing more variants that even include smaller case diameters. A perfect example of this is the Radiomir 1940 PAM 512, which comes in at 42mm.
